Até os dias de hoje segue sendo considerado um herói por muitos anarquistas e republicanos.
Bresci nasceu na localidade de Coiano di Prato, na Toscana e emigrou da Itália para os Estados Unidos, fazendo, aí, sua vida como tecelão em Paterson, Nova Jérsei, local este de uma grande colônia de emigrados italianos. Foi um dos fundadores do jornal La Questione Sociale (A Questão Social) publicado em língua italiana.

Em 1898, a mais de trinta anos da anexação da Lombardia ao Reino da Itália, a situação econômica era muito séria. Nesses trinta anos de emigração aproximadamente 519 mil lombardos emigraram para Milão. Pelo cumprimento de seus deveres e por sua "corajosa defesa da casa real" Baca-Becaris seria condecorado pouco tempo depois pelo Rei Humberto I. Diante da afronta e em memória aos mortos de Milão, especialmente de sua irmã Bresci encheu-se de revolta e determinação em assassinar o rei cujo governo se mostrava truculento e desumano com as classes populares já há décadas.
O assassinato de Humberto I[editar]
Diante das atrocidades de tamanho crime de estado Bresci se viu na obrigação de agir. Assim que o jornal devolveu o empréstimo que havia feito, sem revelar qualquer motivo a seus companheiros viajou para a Itália de navio.
Em uma visita do rei Humberto I a Monza em 29 de Julho de 1900, Gaetano Bresci atirou em seu peito três vezes consecutivas quando o monarca ainda estava sobre sua carruagem e no momento em que havia mandado que parassem para que pudesse ver a premiação esportiva dos atletas do Clube Fortes e Livres. Bresci não resistiu a prisão; deixou-se ser capturado pelo carabinieri Andrea Braggio. Este mesmo carabiniere salvou-o ao protegê-lo de uma tentativa de linchamento da furiosa multidão de presentes.

Precedentes[editar]
Antes da execução exitosa levada a cabo por Gaetano Bresci Humberto I já havia sido alvo de duas outras tentativas de assassinato, ambas também orquestradas por anarquistas. Vinte anos antes, no dia 18 de Novembro de 1878, na cidade Nápoles, o cozinheiro Giovanni Passannante tentara esfaqueá-lo durante uma parada militar. Umberto no entanto conseguiu desviar da faca do libertário enquanto este era duramente atacado pela guarda real. A outra tentativa havia acontecido menos de 3 anos antes da ação de Bresci. No 22 de Abril de 1897 um jovem ferreiro chamado Pietro Acciarito também tentaria esfaquear Humberto igualmente sem lograr êxito.
Captura e julgamento[editar]

Levado a julgamento pelo regicídio, Bresci foi defendido pelo advogado anarquista Francesco Saverio Merlino após a recusa de Filippo Turati. Por seu crime foi sentenciado a morte, em Milão em 29 de agosto de 1900. mais tarde a sentença seria comutada para trabalhos forçados por toda a vida pelo Rei Victor Emmanuel III, sucessor de Umberto I. Este foi o único caso registrado na história em que um rei da Itália comutou uma penalidade.
Às 12:00 do dia 23 de Janeiro de 1901, depois de ser transladado por mar em um navio de guerra, Bresci foi trancafiado em seu destino final: uma cela de três por três metros, desprovida de qualquer mobília, especialmente construída para ele na prisão da Ilha de Santo Stefano, próxima a Ventotene, lugar para onde muitos outros anarquistas já haviam sido mandados por décadas.
Em menos de um ano Gaetano Bresci foi encontrado morto na prisão. Apesar de ter sido oficialmente anunciado que Bresci teria cometido suicídio, é grande a possibilidade de que ele tenha sido executado por seus guardas.
Todos os amigos e parentes de Bresci foram presos e acusados numa tentativa de demonstrar que Bresci não havia atuado individualmente, mas sim tomado parte em uma vasta conspiração anarquista internacional. A polícia de Paterson foi mobilizada para demonstra a existência de tal conspiração, mas acabou não encontrando quaisquer evidências. Posteriormente apesar de nenhuma evidência apontar para a ação de outros anarquistas, estes sofreram ataques dos Conservadores, sendo que alguns trabalhadores foram presos no Jornal sem qualquer reação. Na Itália muitos anarquistas foram presos e condenados por apologia ao regicídio. De fato, em homenagem a Bresci foram devotadas festas e brindes, tanto na Itália como em Paterson.

- Gaetano Bresci e o Rei Vítor Emanuel III da Casa de Sabóia, filho de Humberto I, nasceram no mesmo dia: 11 de Novembro de 1869.
- Na cidade de Carrara existe monumento dedicado a Bresci, uma estátua em mármore de Carrara. O trabalho é do escultor milanês Carlo Sergio Signori (que permaneceu inacabada por causa de sua morte).
- Na cidade de Prato foi dedicada em 1976, uma estrada ao anarquista companheiro. Ela encontra-se perto da Piazza del Mercato Nuovo.
- Bresci costumava carregar sempre consigo uma câmera (que de fato era extremamente cara na época), um modismo americano de seu tempo. A máquina fotográfica o acompanhou no dia em que ele matou Umberto I.
- Bresci se distinguia do 'imigrante italiano comum' por falar o inglês corretamente, possuía uma câmera, um pequeno luxo para a época, e costumava interagir muito com a comunidade americana, diferente de muitos imigrantes italianos (especialmente aqueles que primeiro chegaram aos Estados Unidos), que por várias razões se reuniam em guetos em Little Italy.
- Bresci era muito popular com as mulheres por ser considerado muito desenvolto e elegante, ainda mais se comparado ao homem americano mediano de seu tempo.
- Bresci teve uma filha chamada por sua esposa de Gaetanina. Ao seu tempo ela também foi uma anarquista e, depois da morte de seu pai continuou lutando por uma vida melhor para os trabalhadores.
- No programa de entrevistas de Serena Dandini da TV italiana, em 8 de Fevereiro de 2007 Ascanio Celestini dedicou a Bresci uma canção que conta história de um matador que entra "como um ladrão na casa do ladrão" - que é o patrão que lhe roubou tudo - para matá-lo.
